#7: The Return of the Living Dead (1985)
Just when people thought they knew all the zombie rules, Dan O’Bannon rewrote them with a punk-rock attitude. His 1985 film The Return of the Living Dead is a surprisingly smart take on the genre. The story kicks off when workers at a medical-supply warehouse accidentally release a chemical that reanimates the dead. But these aren’t your parents’ slow, groaning zombies. O’Bannon’s creatures can run, talk, and think. More importantly, this film introduced the idea that zombies crave brains, a concept that became a permanent part of pop culture.
