#8: The Witches (1990)
Nicolas Roeg took a classic Roald Dahl book and turned it into an unsettling film. Released in 1990, The Witches is about a young boy who stumbles upon a convention of witches while on vacation. Anjelica Huston is unmissable as the sinister and glamorous Grand High Witch, who leads a plot against all children. The film’s most memorable moments come from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, whose special effects for the witches’ transformations are the stuff of nightmares. It’s a movie that balances Dahl’s dark fantasy with just enough comedy to keep it from being too much.
