25 Little-known facts from World Cup history

July 16, 2026 by Salvador Sallent

The FIFA World Cup is part sport, part history lesson, part global holiday, and part emotional damage disguised as entertainment. Since 1930, it has produced stolen trophies, heroic dogs, political absences, impossible upsets, cosmic goals, cursed own goals, and enough national heartbreak to power a thousand bar arguments. These curiosities show why the tournament is much more than a month of soccer. It is the world’s favorite excuse to stop working and start shouting at a screen.

#1: The Origins

The first FIFA World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930, with just 13 teams taking part. All matches were played in Montevideo, and Uruguay, already Olympic champion and celebrating the centenary of its first constitution, won the tournament by beating Argentina 4-2 in the final. Compared with today’s mega-event, it feels almost tiny. One city, thirteen teams, no global TV empire, and still enough drama to launch a century-long obsession.
