Pelé was not the youngest player ever to appear at a World Cup, but he remains the tournament’s ultimate teenage phenomenon. In 1958, at 17, he became the youngest goalscorer in World Cup history and the youngest player to score in a final. He missed Brazil’s first two games with a knee injury, then arrived like soccer had accidentally unlocked a cheat code. By the end, the teenager was crying on the pitch with a winner’s medal.
