During the Civil War Battle of Gaines’ Mill in 1862, there was a weird event known as an “acoustic shadow.” Though over 50,000 soldiers clashed violently, nearby Union reinforcements heard nothing. A strange mix of temperature layers and wind conditions redirected sound waves straight into the sky, leaving those soldiers unaware of the brutal battle raging just over the hill.
