#13: William Burroughs Coins “Heavy Metal” (1962)
Before it described guitar riffs and headbanging, “heavy metal” came from William Burroughs’ novel The Soft Machine, where it referred to a character named Uranian Willy, the Heavy Metal Kid. Critics later borrowed the term for loud, distorted rock, and it stuck. Funny how a beat poet gave metal its name.
