#19: The Black Cauldron
Often referred to as Disney’s scariest movie, The Black Cauldron nearly bankrupted Disney. It did so poorly in its original 1985 release that the company didn’t even release it on VHS until 1997. In fact, up until its release, it was the most expensive animated film ever made. Unsurprisingly, it is now a cult classic.
An adaptation of The Chronicles of Prydain, it follows Taran, who must rescue Princess Eilonwy from the evil Horned King. Fans of darker animated films may be fascinated to know that Tim Burton was one of the concept artists for the movie.
