LEAVING
John’s new job meant that he was always out of the house – travelling away from the city and sometimes away from the country. He spent long nights in boring hotel rooms or sitting alone in unfamiliar bars. He didn’t enjoy the job either, which was getting him down.
After a while, both of them could feel that they were growing apart. John was unhappy with his work and Iris was unhappy that he was away all the time. We married so that we would never be lonely again, they thought. So why do we feel more lonely than ever?
