#3: French Fries Likely Began in Belgium
Despite their name, French fries are widely believed to have originated in Belgium. American soldiers stationed there during World War I encountered the dish and associated it with the French-speaking population. The naming followed language rather than geography. Today, Belgium still takes pride in perfecting the fry.
