#5: Guinea Pigs Are Neither From Guinea Nor Pigs
Guinea pigs originated in South America and are rodents, not pigs. The “pig” part may come from the squealing sounds they make, while “Guinea” possibly referred to any distant, exotic place in early trade language. The name has little scientific basis. It reflects how unfamiliar animals were labeled in simple terms.
