Okay, so we get the idea here. The staircase was cut away to form a pathway between two rooms. It makes sense, don’t you think? The part that we don’t understand is why this staircase was left in such a dangerous state. This is a very serious accident just waiting to happen.

First of all, what’s left of the staircase is less than what was taken out, so we can imagine that climbing up or down will be an act of careful balance. A railing could have made it a lot safer to use, especially one at the top to block off the sheer drop. Don’t come downstairs if you’re drowsy!
