#16: Aogashima’s Village Inside an Active Volcano
Aogashima is a small Japanese island community located within the caldera of an active volcano. Roughly 170 residents benefit from fertile soil, abundant seafood, and volcanic steam used for cooking. After a devastating eruption in 1785 forced evacuation, settlers eventually returned and rebuilt one of Japan’s most isolated villages.
