#7: Nathuram Godse
A radical Hindu nationalist shattered the celebratory dawn of Indian independence by shooting Mahatma Gandhi during an evening prayer meeting. Nathuram Godse fiercely believed that the leader’s constant accommodations toward the Muslim population represented a direct threat to the survival of a unified Hindu state. He was rapidly tried, convicted of treason, and executed on the gallows that exact same year.
