#8: Milk Chocolate Was a Swiss Breakthrough
Milk chocolate took shape in Switzerland in the 1870s, especially through the work of Daniel Peter, who used milk powder developed by Henri Nestlé to create a smoother, creamier chocolate. The innovation mattered because milk softened cacao’s bitterness and broadened its appeal. Dark chocolate had intensity. Milk chocolate had charm. It was the product that helped chocolate become a less aristocratic beverage and more everyday temptation. Switzerland, naturally, made itself very difficult to ignore after that.
