#16: You Do Not Need to Wait an Hour After Eating Before Swimming — Modern Medical Consensus Established: 20th Century
Many families have enforced a strict rule requiring children to wait at least an hour after eating before entering the water. The concern was that digestion would divert blood away from muscles, causing severe cramps that might result in drowning. While vigorous exercise immediately after a very large meal may feel uncomfortable for some people, medical research has found little evidence that ordinary swimming after eating creates significant danger. Healthy individuals can usually enter the water safely without waiting for a specific amount of time. Of course, swimming under the influence of alcohol, exhaustion, or unsafe conditions remains far more serious than eating beforehand. The long-standing rule survives mainly because it was repeated as a precaution rather than because science supported it.
