#20: Most Stomach Ulcers Are Caused by Bacteria, Not Stress Alone — Helicobacter pylori Identified: 1982
For much of the twentieth century, stomach ulcers were commonly blamed on stress, spicy foods, or demanding lifestyles. That understanding changed dramatically in 1982 when Australian researchers Barry Marshall and Robin Warren identified the bacterium Helicobacter pylori as the primary cause of many ulcers. Their discovery revolutionized gastroenterology because it showed that antibiotics could successfully treat a condition previously managed mainly through diet changes and acid-reducing medications. Although stress and certain foods can worsen symptoms or make existing ulcers feel more painful, they are not usually the underlying cause. Long-term use of anti-inflammatory medications can also contribute to ulcer formation in some patients. This breakthrough remains one of medicine’s clearest examples of how scientific evidence can completely overturn long-accepted beliefs.
