#8: Goldfish Remember Much More Than a Few Seconds — Goldfish Domesticated: 11th Century (China)
The idea that goldfish can remember something for only three seconds has been repeated for so long that many people accept it without question. Scientific studies tell a very different story. Researchers have shown that goldfish are capable of recognizing feeding schedules, learning routes through simple mazes, distinguishing colors and shapes, and remembering tasks for weeks or even months. These abilities demonstrate far more advanced learning and memory than the popular myth suggests. Like many animals, goldfish adapt to routines and can associate specific events with rewards over extended periods. Rather than being forgetful creatures with almost no memory, they possess cognitive abilities that continue to surprise scientists studying animal intelligence.
