#4: Mahatma Gandhi
Gandhi’s criminal record was not incidental to his politics—it became part of the method. In South Africa, he organized resistance against discriminatory registration and pass laws targeting Indians. In January 1908, after refusing an order to leave the Transvaal, Gandhi was arrested and sentenced to two months in prison. More arrests followed. What authorities treated as lawbreaking, Gandhi developed into satyagraha: openly violating unjust rules, accepting punishment, and using that punishment to expose the injustice itself.
