#1: An Elephant Monument Rising Over Paris Instead of the Arc de Triomphe (Proposed for the Place de l’Étoile, 1806)
Long before the Arc de Triomphe became one of Paris’ defining monuments, Napoleon’s era inspired several far more extravagant concepts. Among the most remarkable was the idea of constructing an enormous elephant-shaped monument that visitors could actually enter. Inspired partly by Napoleon’s fascination with Egypt and other distant cultures, the structure would have combined symbolism with spectacle. Observation platforms inside the hollow body would have offered panoramic views across the city.
