#3: A Pyramid Form Anchoring the Lincoln Memorial (Early design studies, 1911)
Before architects settled on the familiar Greek temple design, several concepts explored entirely different architectural traditions for honoring Abraham Lincoln. One proposal envisioned a monumental pyramid inspired by the enduring symbolism of ancient Egypt. The enclosed structure would have emphasized permanence, mystery, and eternal remembrance rather than democratic openness. Visitors might have entered a solemn interior instead of approaching Lincoln through the current open colonnade. Although visually striking, the design would have created a very different emotional experience.
