#6: A Greek Temple Replacing the Washington Monument’s Obelisk (Original competition proposals, 1836)
Early discussions about honoring George Washington included proposals for elaborate temple-like memorials inspired by classical Greece and Rome. Such a building would have blended naturally with many other neoclassical structures throughout Washington, D.C. However, its familiarity might also have prevented it from standing apart as a truly iconic national symbol. The eventual decision to build a simple obelisk created a clean and instantly recognizable silhouette visible across the capital. Its minimal design allows the monument to dominate the skyline without unnecessary ornamentation.
