Famous Landmark Designs That Were Initially Rejected

Although the Statue of Liberty briefly served as an operational lighthouse after its completion, some earlier ideas envisioned a structure devoted almost entirely to maritime navigation. Instead of the now-famous robed figure, Liberty Island might have featured a much taller beacon designed primarily for practical use. Such a lighthouse would certainly have benefited ships entering New York Harbor, but it likely would not have inspired the same emotional connection. Lady Liberty’s symbolic message of freedom eventually gave the island global significance beyond navigation.
