Stranger Things (2016) was originally developed as a series called Montauk, set in Montauk, Long Island, rather than fictional Hawkins, Indiana. The Duffer Brothers liked the coastal setting because of its connection to Jaws (1975). Production concerns eventually pushed them toward Georgia and a fictional Indiana town, which opened up more creative freedom.
