Famous Tourist Attractions That Aren’t What They Seem

Beijing’s Old Summer Palace, or Yuanmingyuan, survives largely as ruins after its destruction and looting by Anglo-French forces in 1860, making its lost appearance part of its historical significance. Hengdian approached that absence in a radically different way by constructing New Yuanmingyuan, an enormous modern recreation inspired by the former imperial gardens and palaces. Rather than preserving ruins, the attraction attempts to give visitors a visual impression of architectural environments that no longer survive intact at the original site. The project incorporates Chinese palace architecture, gardens, waterways, and recreations inspired by the European-style buildings once found within the imperial complex. Its polished structures can therefore produce an experience very different from visiting the haunting remains preserved in Beijing. The distinction matters because Hengdian is not the recovered original palace but a modern interpretation of something largely lost to history.
