Altamira became internationally famous for its spectacular prehistoric paintings, particularly the multicolored bison covering sections of its cave ceiling. The original cave eventually faced the same dilemma confronting other celebrated prehistoric sites: visitors themselves could become a threat to the art they came to admire. Today, access to the genuine cave is extraordinarily restricted, meaning the overwhelming majority of tourists do not experience the original painted chambers. Instead, the National Museum and Research Center of Altamira contains the Neocave, an extremely detailed reconstruction of the cave as it existed in prehistoric times. Its celebrated ceiling recreates the bison and other images while also helping visitors understand how prehistoric people may have occupied and used the space. Because the reproduction is designed around archaeological research rather than merely visual imitation, it functions as an educational reconstruction as well as a substitute.
