#1: Ross Island Penal Colony in India
Ross Island in India’s Andaman Islands became a British penal colony after the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The island later served as an administrative center with homes, churches, and offices. A major earthquake in 1941 caused heavy destruction, and Japanese forces occupied it during World War II. Jungle vines now cover the remaining ruins.
