#18: Kolmanskop Diamond Mining Town in Namibia
Kolmanskop was founded during the early 1900s after diamonds were discovered in what is now Namibia, then controlled by Germany. The mining town quickly became wealthy and even included theaters and hospitals. When richer diamond fields appeared farther south, residents left. Today, desert sand fills homes and hallways throughout the abandoned settlement.
