Houtouwan was once a busy fishing village in China’s Shengsi Islands near Shanghai. During the 1990s, declining seafood supplies pushed residents to move elsewhere for work. Over time, vines and greenery covered nearly every building. A few former residents later returned as guides, helping tourists explore the quiet village and abandoned homes.
