#3: The Village — The Prisoner (TV series, 1967–1968)
The Village appears pleasant: pastel buildings, good weather, friendly neighbors. Nobody has a name. Everyone has a number. Escape attempts fail in ways that are never fully explained, and the identity of Number One, the authority behind the surveillance, remains the show’s central unanswered question. Patrick McGoohan created and starred in this series and refused to provide comfortable resolution, which is the most honest thing any creator has done with this particular premise.
