#7: Dunwich — “The Dunwich Horror” by H.P. Lovecraft
Lovecraft published this story in 1929 and set it in a decaying Massachusetts hill town where the old families have intermarried across too many generations, the farmhouses smell wrong, and at least one family has been conducting rituals that the local livestock find distressing. The horror that eventually emerges from the Whateley farm is invisible to ordinary perception and has to be rendered visible by a chemical spray before it can be destroyed, which raises questions about what else in Dunwich requires similar treatment.
