#23: The Matrix (1999)
A genre-defying and standard-setting masterwork of science fiction entertainment, The Matrix became the highest-grossing Warner Bros. film of 1999, garnering ample recognition at the Academy Awards. In 2012, The Matrix was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant.” I guess taking the red pill really did pay off for Neo and the film’s directors, the Wachowski siblings.
