’60s and ’70s Food Rules That Went Out of Style

Food culture in the ’60s and ’70s followed its own rules, shaped by tight budgets, home cooking, and simple routines. Many habits that were normal then feel almost foreign today. Looking back shows how much eating has changed, from portions and snacks to fast food, family meals, and daily expectations.

#1: Dinner Came From Hunting and Canning

Many families relied on venison pot roast, meatloaf, or fried chicken along with potatoes and home-canned vegetables. Kids drank milk, while adults had black coffee. Soda wasn’t part of daily life. Meals were filling, homemade, and based on what the family hunted or preserved.
