Thomas Carlyle completed the first draft of The French Revolution: A History (1837) and lent the only copy to philosopher John Stuart Mill. Through a misunderstanding, the manuscript was accidentally burned by a household servant. Carlyle rewrote the entire volume from memory. The published work became a classic, but the original draft vanished forever.
