#20: Los Olvidados (1950)
Like a grittier A Clockwork Orange set in Mexico, this film follows a gang of young men driven to crime. But director Luis Buñuel wasn’t romanticizing violence; he was investigating its causes. He shows how poverty and neglect can breed aggression as a survival tool. It is a devastating look at how easily youth can be corrupted. The Legion missed the point, accusing the film of exactly what it was condemning.
