#12: Curtis Mayfield — “Move On Up” (1970)
Rapid-fire, soaring violin lines dance effortlessly over driving conga rhythms and punchy brass fills on this uplifting anthem of Black empowerment. Arranger Riley Hampton constructed a frantic, continuous string chart that mimics the frantic energy of a city street while maintaining an atmosphere of pure jubilation. The string arrangement gives the extended track its relentless forward momentum.
