Hacks for Keeping Food Safe from Wildlife

March 13, 2022 by Amy Dickson

Some people think that wild animals only roam around at night but this isn’t true. They may be sleeping during the day but they are definitely out and about during the night.

This means that you have to be careful about where you leave your food and how you store it when you’re traveling, hiking, or backpacking.

Here are some tips for keeping your food safe from wildlife:

  • Keep all food in a bag or container with a tight-fitting lid.
  • Hang the bag or container from a tree limb or other high spot so that animals can’t reach it.
  • If there’s no way to hang the bag or container, bury it deep in the ground so that animals can’t get to it.
  • Make sure your campsite is clean and free of any food scraps or garbage. Animals will be drawn to these smells and may try to get into your campsite to get to the food.
  • Pack out all of your garbage so that animals can’t get to it.
  • Be aware of the animals in the area and what they might be attracted to. For example, if there are bears in the area, make sure you are storing your food in a way that they can’t get to it.
  • By following these tips, you can help keep your food safe from wildlife while traveling, hiking, or backpacking.

Why do you need to keep food safe from wildlife when camping?

Wild animals can be attracted to food smells and may try to get into your campsite to get to the food. This can be dangerous for both you and the animal.

Wildlife getting into campsites to get human food can be dangerous for both the animal and the person. For the animal, it can mean getting injured or even killed as a result of interacting with humans. For the person, it can mean getting attacked or bitten by the animal. It can also mean contracting a disease from the animal.

That’s why it’s important to take steps to keep your food safe from wildlife when camping. By following the tips in this article, you can help reduce the chances of any dangerous interactions with wildlife.
