#20: Kalachi’s Village of Sudden Sleep
Kalachi belongs to a different kind of mystery because it unfolded recently, with doctors, environmental tests, and official concern rather than an old rumor alone. Beginning around 2013, residents of the Kazakh village reported sudden episodes of deep sleep that could last for long stretches, sometimes followed by memory problems, weakness, or hallucinations. Investigators focused on possible gases linked to nearby abandoned uranium mines, including carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons, and many residents were eventually moved away.
