#20: Hamlet (1948)
Laurence Olivier’s Hamlet won the Academy Award for Best Picture and remains one of the great classic Shakespeare films, even if it trims the play and leans heavily into psychological gloom. Olivier’s prince is elegant, haunted, and very much trapped inside his own mind. The film helped bridge Shakespearean stage prestige and Hollywood recognition. Is it the full Hamlet? No. Is it the Hamlet that made Oscar history? Absolutely.
