This is a common occurrence in the Philippines
Though it may appear to all of us to be exceedingly harsh and cruel, this is actually quite normal in rural areas of the Philippines. Unfortunately, people in rural areas earn very little money to sustain their families and provide sufficient care for their disabled members.
They also lack the education necessary to make decisions that will benefit their impaired family members. There is a stigma against those suffering from mental diseases in many third-world nations, including the Philippines, and there are few resources available to treat them.
