#10: Lake Peigneur (Louisiana)
An error in an oil exploration turned a shallow freshwater lake into a deep saltwater whirlpool. In 1980, a Texaco oil rig accidentally drilled into a salt mine working directly below this quiet lake in Louisiana. Water from the lake rushed into the mine, dissolved the salt, and formed a huge whirlpool that swallowed not only the drilling platform but also eleven barges and several acres of land.
