#18: Marlene Dietrich (December 27, 1901 – May 6, 1992)
Marlene Dietrich understood the power of a well-cut suit. The German-born actress and singer became an international star after her role in The Blue Angel in 1930, then built an image that played freely with traditional ideas about femininity. She wore tuxedos and men’s clothing in public, sometimes provoking controversy simply by walking into a room dressed in a way society considered inappropriate. Dietrich also had relationships with men and women, although she kept much of her private life to herself.
