We have some bad news for you, folks: Those movies you love that taught you all about an important historical event in an engaging way? There’s a good chance they’re actually pretty inaccurate. This is the case for a large number of films depicting historical events or figures, including some blockbusters. We’re here today to take a look at some of the movies that distort reality for entertainment purposes.
#1: The Sound of Music (1965)
The Sound of Music is based on a true story and follows Maria, who is hired as a governess for children of the von Trapp family. One key plot of the story is that she develops romantic feelings for the father of the family, Captain Georg von Trapp. Initially, this leads her to leave her position, but she later returns and they marry.

It was the desire of the producers to create a fairytale feel that led to the major inaccuracies of the musical. For instance, the Captain is portrayed as distant when he was actually doting on his children, whereas Maria (the motherly figure) reportedly had frequent outbursts of rage. The biggest difference, though, is the couple married for practical reasons, not love.
