Living in ancient Greece during the fourth century BCE, Diogenes rejected wealth, status, and social expectations. Associated with the Cynic school of philosophy, he reportedly lived in a large storage jar and owned few possessions. His public criticism of authority made him one of history’s best-known outsiders.
