#3: Spartacus (c. 111 BC-71 BC)
Spartacus was a Thracian who ended up trained as a combat performer in Capua under Roman control. Around 73 BC, he and a group of fellow fighters broke away and gathered a large following made up of escaped laborers and others outside Roman society. The movement grew across Italy and challenged Roman authority for several years. Roman generals eventually defeated his forces in 71 BC, and Spartacus died during the final clashes.
