#16: David Letterman Dismissed Hollywood’s Version of the Late-Night War — The Late Shift (1996)
HBO’s The Late Shift dramatized the extraordinary battle surrounding Johnny Carson’s retirement and the competition between David Letterman and Jay Leno for control of The Tonight Show. Letterman was openly dismissive of the production and particularly unimpressed with John Michael Higgins’ portrayal of him. The television movie was based on Bill Carter’s extensively reported book, but converting private negotiations, executive conversations, and celebrity personalities into drama inevitably required reconstruction. Letterman mocked the project on his own program rather than treating it as an authoritative version of events, turning his dissatisfaction into material for comedy. Jay Leno also disputed elements of how the behind-the-scenes struggle was characterized, making the production part of the very media spectacle it depicted.
