Prior to the ‘70s, carpeting was quite expensive. Most homeowners couldn’t afford wall-to-wall carpeting. But new manufacturing processes and cheaper materials in the 1970s made shag carpeting affordable. Soft and plush, shag carpeting also took on a luxurious connotation.
