A Contaminated History
In 2018, the name Laura Ingalls Wilder was withdrawn from the shortlist for an American children’s literature prize due to the way in which she portrayed members of underrepresented groups in her writing. The Children’s Literacy Legacy Award has been rechristened as the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award. Previously, it was known as the Children’s Literacy Legacy Award.
The Association for Library Service to Children has stated, “we must also assess if Wilder’s impact today is worthy of this particular prize for lifetime accomplishment presented by an organization committed to all children.”
