The locusts were able to survive
In the middle of the 1870s, Laura and her family were affected by a biblical disease. The southern region of the United States was decimated by a cloud of locusts, which consisted of 3.5 trillion individual locusts. The damage caused by the insects was estimated to be 161.6 billion dollars. Many people were in danger of going hungry, including Laura’s family.
After all of this carnage and devastation, the swarming grasshopper species finally went extinct in 1902. Nobody has worked out why they mysteriously ceased to exist all of a sudden.
