What exactly does the word “true” mean? Laura Ingalls Wilder is credited with having stated at one point that the narratives she detailed in her novels were “all factual.” Wilder’s own truth is likely reflected in Laura’s character’s feelings. Still, many of the events and characters in the novels have been adjusted or manufactured to fit the author’s vision.
For instance, the tale that her father was a member of the bloodthirsty gang known as the “Bloody Benders” was wholly made up. However, Laura’s father was never involved with the Bloody Benders in any way.
