She is recognized with a medal that bears her name as a mark of honor.
The Newbery Medal is given to the author of a book deemed the best children’s book published in the United States. Although none of her publications were ever honored with the medal, she was put forth for consideration for the prize a total of five times. Even if she didn’t take home the Newbery, she walked away with a much more valuable award. In 1954, the American Library Association introduced a new prize for authors and illustrators of children’s literature. The distinction in question was known by its full moniker, the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal.
